From Mateo
Huggies size medium definitely do not work for me! I explode out them of every single time! I eat, and I poop. I have a bottle, and I poop. I play, and I poop. My mommy says that I poop more than any baby she has ever met. That might be true. All I know for sure is that I need a different kind of diaper! Urgente! Grandma Edelmira is getting tired of washing my clothes, too, because every time I change my diaper I also have to change my clothes. Goodness gracious! At least my mommy's friends gave her lots of comfy clothes and pijamas that work great for me. Grandpa Jose and Aunt Jasney are out buying me some different diapers. Hopefully these will work better!
Update
Mateo is a very smart little boy. He knows now when the medicine is coming and does all he can to keep it out of his mouth - boy is he strong! But once it's over, he calms quickly. He seems to be feeling better with each passing day, but it is really difficult in the moments when we give him all his medicines to see him so upset. It has been especially hard for Daddy since he is the one really "giving" the medicine. Mommy just has to hold him down.
If you would pray for both Jaimie and Jose - neither of us has been feeling well the past few days. Actually, Jaimie has been feeling terrible and hardly able to fulfill some of the basic responsibilities of being a mommy. Last night was especially hard. However, Jose is a wonderful father - full of love and responsibility - he adores Mateo.
One of the things that a has been most fulfilling is experiencing the reality of parenthood together and seeing how each other reacts to Mateo's needs. Both of us have been so proud of the other as we watch one another interact with Mateo and respond to him. It has been very rewarding.

Good news and bad news - Buenas noticias y malas noticias
The good news is, Mateo is feeling much better. His cheeks are no longer so flushed and his little nose is mostly clean. He still has a little cough, but He has been eating banana and apple and soup and chicken and beef and some cereal. He loves his bottle. He is such a good baby.
The bad news is Mommy has not been feeling well at all. The last few nights have taken their toll since we have to wake Mateo up every few hours for medicine. His schedule is medicine at 8, then 11, then 12, then 4, then 6. Sleep certainly does change with a baby!
The very best thing is when Mateo looks up at you with his big brown eyes and long eyelashes. He has a small little dimple in his chin, like his Mommy and curly hair like his Daddy. On his right big toe Mateo has a little birthmark, and he has fat little feet like his Daddy, too!
Right now, Mateo is getting ready to take a shower with his Daddy. We just finished some peach cereal and are a big mess. Partially due to the fact that Mateo likes to play with his food alot.
Las buenas noticias son que Mateo se esta sintiendo mucho mejor. Sus cachetes no están colorados y su naricita está más limpia. Todavía tiene un poco de tos, pero ha estado comiendo banano, manzana, sopa, pollo, carne y cereal. Le encanta su tetero. El es un muy buen bebe.
Las malas noticias son que la mama no se ha sentido muy bien. Las últimas noches han sido bien difíciles porque nos toca despertar a Mateo cada dos o tres horas para darle la medicina. El horario de medicina es a las 8, luego a las 11, 12, 4 y finalmente a las 6. El sueño de verdad cambia con un bebe!
Lo mejor es cuando Mateo lo mira a uno con sus ojos grandes y sus pestañas largas. El tiene el mentón partido como su mama y cabello crespo como su papa. En su dedo gordo del pie derecho tiene una mancha de nacimiento y sus pies son gorditos como los de su papa!
En este momento, Mateo se está alistando para bañarse con su papa. Acabamos de comer cereal con durazno y estamos todos untados, parcialmente porque a Mateo le fascina jugar con su comida.

Mateos health - La salud de Mateo
We have a sick little baby... we didnt know until today when we took him to a pediatrician here in Bogota. This doctor was recommended to us by Liliana and Mauricio Cogua who have a little girl, Isabella, who is 6 months old.
The doctors name is Santa Maria, and she gave Mateo a general checkup and looked over his medical history from Los Pisingos. Mateo has an ear infection in both ears, bronchitis that could develop into child asthma, and a very snotty little nose. We were given strict instructions to keep him at home for the next 5 days while he gets better. In the meantime, we have to give him inhaler treatments every hour as well as some general pain medicine for his ears and for his cough.
Some of you know Jaimie well enough to know that recently I have been seeing a natural health doctor to help my body figure out how to funtion at its best. Through this experience, my view of traditional medicine has been challenged. However... being here and knowing how sick our little guy is, we decided it is best to just get him well, and we can go from there.
Mateo is really an angel. With all the medicine and treatments and him not feeling well at all, he doesnt complain or cry. When he feels his worst he has this cute little whimper that makes you want to make everything better instantaneously. So we do the best we can and give him all the hugs and kisses he could ask for and more.
Today Mateo had soup, banana and yogurt for lunch. The banana was a mess, but he loved it. We let him mash it all over the place. He started babbling while he ate and began to learn how to pick up food and bring it to his mouth.
Mateo is taking a little nap now. Please pray that he gets well very soon, and that he sleeps soundly (especially at night, last night included lots of cuddling and rocking to sooth him). Today we learned that Pisingos did not want us to receive him for another couple of days since he is so sick, but Amparo, bless her heart, insisted that we receive Mateo yesterday all the same and that he would be much better with his family. We wholeheartedly agree!
Tenemos un bebe enfermito, no lo sabíamos hasta que fuimos hoy al pediatra aquí en Bogotá. Este doctor fue recomendado por Liliana y Mauricio Cogua quienes tienen una bebe, Isabela, quien tiene 6 meses.
El doctor se llama Patricia Santamaría. Ella reviso a Mateo completamente y leyo la historia médica que nos entregaron en Los Pisingos. Mateo tiene una infección en ambos oídos, bronquitis que puede convertirse en asma infantil y la naricita muy congestionada. El doctor nos dio instrucciones específicas de tener a Mateo en casa los próximos 5 días mientras se mejora. Mientras tanto tenemos que darle tratamientos con un inhalador cada hora y también medicina para el dolor de sus oídos y la tos.
Algunos de ustedes conocen a Jaimie lo suficiente para saber que recientemente ha estado viendo un médico naturista que le está ayudando a que su cuerpo funcione normalmente. A través de esta experiencia, mi percepción sobre la medicina tradicional ha cambiado mucho. De todas maneras… estando aquí y sabiendo cuan enfermo esta nuestro bebe, hemos decidido que lo mejor es que él se mejore y después decidiremos…
Mateo es un ángel. Con toda la medicina y los tratamientos, el no se siente nada bien pero no se queja o llora. Cuando se siente muy mal, el tiene un quejidito que nos dan ganas de querer arreglar todo inmediatamente. Entonces nosotros hacemos todo lo que podemos y le damos muchos besos y abrazos, todos los que él nos quiera pedir.
Hoy, Mateo tomo sopa, comió banana y yogurt en el almuerzo. El banano fue un enmelocote, pero a él le encanto. Nosotros dejamos que lo untara por todos lados. El empezó a ¨hablarnos¨ mientras que lo alimentábamos y mientras el aprendía a coger la comida de la mesa y ponérsela en la boca. Mateo está tomando una siesta. Por favor oren para que Mateo se sienta bien pronto y para que duerma bien (especialmente en la noche, anoche tuvimos que abrazarlo y arrullarlo mucho para calmarlo). Hoy nosotros nos enteramos que Los Pisingos no querían entregarnos a Mateo por lo menos en un par de días más por lo que él se sentía enfermo, pero Amparo gracias a Dios, insistió en que recibiéramos a Mateo ayer y que seguramente se iba a mejorar más pronto con su familia. Nosotros estamos de acuerdo.

Mateo is sleeping now.
What a beautiful, sweet baby boy God has given us! I wonder what he might have been thinking this whole afternoon and evening meeting his parents and grandparents Cogua and... the ENTIRE Cogua family! My goodness, Mateo met everyone and he was happy the whole time, not one quivering lip or tear, just a happy baby. Theres much to tell about today, but it has been an unforgettable day. We are blessed beyond what we even imagined.
If you can imagine... a cute little button nose, soft brown hair, quiet happy brown eyes and the most amiable disposition I have ever observed.
Tonight as I put him in his pijamas (Emily, the striped zipper pair you bought for him), Jose and I spent a good amount of time just playing with his chubby little fit and kissing him all over. The smile and giggles he returned to us were priceless. Then I put him down in his crib, prayed for him and sang to him and put him to bed. Would you believe he fell right asleep?
Mateo is a beautiful boy. He looks just like the picture but even sweeter. We are so happy and so blessed!
I promise ... pictures are coming as soon as we figure out all this technology!
Que bebe tan bello y dulce nos han dado! Me pregunto que pudo estar pensando toda la tarde mientras conocía a sus papas y abuelos Cogua y… toda la familia Cogua! Mateo conoció a todo el mundo y estaba feliz todo el tiempo, ni una sola queja, ni una lágrima, simplemente un bebe feliz. Podría decir mucho sobre este día, ha sido un día inolvidable. Nos han bendecido mas allá de lo que nosotros podríamos haber imaginado.
Imagínense una naricita pequeñita, cabello color castaño claro, ojos cafés y el comportamiento más tranquilo de todo el mundo.
Esta noche yo le puse su pijama (Emily, el de rayitas con cremallera que tu le compraste), José y yo pasamos un buen rato jugando con cuerpecito gordito y besándolo por todas partes. Las sonrisas y carcajaditas que nos dio no tienen precio para nosotros. Después lo puse en su cunita, ore por él, le cante un poco y lo puse a dormir… Créanlo o no el se quedo dormido casi de inmediato.Mateo es un niño muy bonito. El se ve igualito a la foto pero es mucho más dulce. Nosotros estamos muy felices, es una verdadera bendición.
Lo prometo… pondré fotos tan pronto como aprendamos a usar toda la tecnología!

Today is the day!
Today is the day! We arrived in Bogota, Colombia last night around 9:40. It was one of the bumpiest plane rides on which Jose Fernando or I have ever been, but we arrived safely and were welcomed by my father-in-law, Jose. Now, don’t get confused here… there are three “Jose’s” that we know and will see while we are here in Colombia: Jose Fernando, Mateo’s dad; Jose Agapito, Mateo’s grandfather; Jose Lopez, Mateo’s uncle married to Jose Fernando’s sister, daughter of Jose Agapito. Easy!
We celebrated Christmas with Jaimie’s family on Christmas Eve. Last night we celebrated Christmas with Jose Fernando’s family. Both nights were filled with gifts for Mateo.
This morning, the feeling is … excitement, anticipation, nervousness, joy. I don’t think anyone can think of anything else but our son, our baby boy for whom we’ve waited so long. I can only imagine what it will be like to hold him and kiss his chubby little cheeks and welcome him into our family!
This afternoon we receive Mateo Fernando in the house of Amparo. Amparo is the senora who became friends with my mother-in-law, Edelmira, in October. Their friendship through volunteering at Los Pisingos is the key reason why the adoption has moved so very quickly since October. Amparo also has known Mateo and been one of his caretakers since he arrived at Los Pisingos in April. She knows and loves him and we are very grateful for her influence
Los Pisingos always gives the babies to the adoptive families in someone’s personal home, never at the orphanage. Until recently, the families went to the home of one of the co-founders of Pisingos who passed away. So today, Amparo has opened her home to us and also welcomed us to invite a small group to come along to meet Mateo for the first time. Edelmira and Jose (Jose Fernando's parents, Mateo's grandparents), Jasney (Jose Fernando's sister and Mateo's aunt and godmother), Agapito, Rosa and Carmen (Fernando's grandparents, Mateo's great grandparents), Hamilton (Jose's cousin and Mateo's godparent), Jorge (Jose Fernando's godfather), and Gladys and Fabio (Edelmira's best friend and her husband - who will also give us a ride to and from Dona Amparo's home since today is "pico y placa," driving restriction for my in-laws.
So, later today we'll post pictures and hopefully a video so you can see at least some of what we experience today receiving our precious gift - Mateo Fernando Cogua - our son!
Hoy es el día! Llegamos a Bogotá, Colombia anoche más o menos a las 9:40. Fue uno de los vuelos mas turbulentos que José Fernando o yo hemos tenido, pero llegamos bien y mi suegro, José, nos estaba esperando. Bueno, por favor no se confundan… hay tres Joses que conocemos y veremos mientras estemos en Colombia: José Fernando, el papa de Mateo, José Agapito, el abuelito de Mateo, José López, el tío de mateo que está casado con la hermana de José Fernando hija de José Agapito… Fácil!
Celebramos la navidad con la familia de Jaimie el día antes de navidad. Anoche celebramos la navidad con la familia de Jaimie. Ambas celebraciones estuvieron llenas de regalos para Mateo.
Esta mañana el sentimiento es de… emoción, anticipación, nervios, felicidad. Yo no creo que nadie pueda pensar en otra cosa diferente a nuestro hijo, maestro bebito por el que hemos esperado tanto. Solo puedo imaginar cómo será el poder tenerlo en mis brazos, besarle los cachetitos y darle la bienvenida a nuestra familia!
Esta tarde nosotros vamos a recibir a Mateo Fernando en la casa de Amparo. Amparo es la señora quien se volvió amiga de mi suegra, Edelmira en octubre. Esa amistad que creció a través del trabajo voluntario en Los Pisingos es la razón fundamental por la que el proceso de adopción se ha movido tan rápido desde Octubre. Amparo conoce a Mateo desde chiquitito y ha sido quien lo ha cuidado desde que llego a Los Pisingos en abril. Ella lo conoce y lo amos y nosotros estamos muy agradecidos por su ayuda.
Los Pisingos, siempre entregan los bebes a sus familias adoptivas en la casa de alguien, nunca en el orfanato. Hasta hace poco las familias iban a la casa de una de las fundadoras de Los Pisingos quien murió hace unos meses. Entonces hoy, Amparo nos abrió las puertas de su casa y nos permitió invitar un grupo pequeño de gente para que nos acompañaran a recibir a Mateo por primera vez. Más tarde vamos a poner fotos y ojala un video para que ustedes puedan ver por lo menos un poquito de lo que nosotros experimentamos hoy al recibir a nuestro precioso regalo – Mateo Fernando Cogua – nuestro hijo!
We celebrated Christmas with Jaimie’s family on Christmas Eve. Last night we celebrated Christmas with Jose Fernando’s family. Both nights were filled with gifts for Mateo.
This morning, the feeling is … excitement, anticipation, nervousness, joy. I don’t think anyone can think of anything else but our son, our baby boy for whom we’ve waited so long. I can only imagine what it will be like to hold him and kiss his chubby little cheeks and welcome him into our family!
This afternoon we receive Mateo Fernando in the house of Amparo. Amparo is the senora who became friends with my mother-in-law, Edelmira, in October. Their friendship through volunteering at Los Pisingos is the key reason why the adoption has moved so very quickly since October. Amparo also has known Mateo and been one of his caretakers since he arrived at Los Pisingos in April. She knows and loves him and we are very grateful for her influence
Los Pisingos always gives the babies to the adoptive families in someone’s personal home, never at the orphanage. Until recently, the families went to the home of one of the co-founders of Pisingos who passed away. So today, Amparo has opened her home to us and also welcomed us to invite a small group to come along to meet Mateo for the first time. Edelmira and Jose (Jose Fernando's parents, Mateo's grandparents), Jasney (Jose Fernando's sister and Mateo's aunt and godmother), Agapito, Rosa and Carmen (Fernando's grandparents, Mateo's great grandparents), Hamilton (Jose's cousin and Mateo's godparent), Jorge (Jose Fernando's godfather), and Gladys and Fabio (Edelmira's best friend and her husband - who will also give us a ride to and from Dona Amparo's home since today is "pico y placa," driving restriction for my in-laws.
So, later today we'll post pictures and hopefully a video so you can see at least some of what we experience today receiving our precious gift - Mateo Fernando Cogua - our son!
Hoy es el día! Llegamos a Bogotá, Colombia anoche más o menos a las 9:40. Fue uno de los vuelos mas turbulentos que José Fernando o yo hemos tenido, pero llegamos bien y mi suegro, José, nos estaba esperando. Bueno, por favor no se confundan… hay tres Joses que conocemos y veremos mientras estemos en Colombia: José Fernando, el papa de Mateo, José Agapito, el abuelito de Mateo, José López, el tío de mateo que está casado con la hermana de José Fernando hija de José Agapito… Fácil!
Celebramos la navidad con la familia de Jaimie el día antes de navidad. Anoche celebramos la navidad con la familia de Jaimie. Ambas celebraciones estuvieron llenas de regalos para Mateo.
Esta mañana el sentimiento es de… emoción, anticipación, nervios, felicidad. Yo no creo que nadie pueda pensar en otra cosa diferente a nuestro hijo, maestro bebito por el que hemos esperado tanto. Solo puedo imaginar cómo será el poder tenerlo en mis brazos, besarle los cachetitos y darle la bienvenida a nuestra familia!
Esta tarde nosotros vamos a recibir a Mateo Fernando en la casa de Amparo. Amparo es la señora quien se volvió amiga de mi suegra, Edelmira en octubre. Esa amistad que creció a través del trabajo voluntario en Los Pisingos es la razón fundamental por la que el proceso de adopción se ha movido tan rápido desde Octubre. Amparo conoce a Mateo desde chiquitito y ha sido quien lo ha cuidado desde que llego a Los Pisingos en abril. Ella lo conoce y lo amos y nosotros estamos muy agradecidos por su ayuda.
Los Pisingos, siempre entregan los bebes a sus familias adoptivas en la casa de alguien, nunca en el orfanato. Hasta hace poco las familias iban a la casa de una de las fundadoras de Los Pisingos quien murió hace unos meses. Entonces hoy, Amparo nos abrió las puertas de su casa y nos permitió invitar un grupo pequeño de gente para que nos acompañaran a recibir a Mateo por primera vez. Mateo Fernando Cogua
He's here! Yesterday we received our referral and this is our precious baby boy, Mateo Fernando Cogua!
Monday, December 10 at 2:15pm, is when Jaimie first saw Mateo's picture. Olga Tasso from CHSFS had sent an email and I opened it at work. I was not expecting a referral and when I saw the date of birth: March 31, 2007 and opened the attached picture, I began to weep alone at my office desk! What a BEAUTIFUL baby! What a precious gift! I called Jose Fernando immediately and he came to the church right away.
We have named him MATEO FERNANDO COGUA. Mateo means "gift of God" for he is truly our gift from God after years of waiting for our baby. Fernando means "bold leader" and is also Jose's middle name. Who knows what Cogua means, but we are proud to have Mateo in the family Cogua! ;)
We are so happy! Words cannot express our joy. And Mateo is a beautiful baby!
Here's what we know about him:
- He is a happy baby. They say that he laughs and smiles all the time and interacts with everyone.
- He was born on March 31, 2007 and arrived at Los Pisingos on April 27, 2007. So he is a little over 8 months old.
- He's crawling! And he is already eating soups, juices and other baby foods.
- He is the favorite baby of Edelmira's new friend - she is thrilled that Mateo is now part of our family.
Of course, our parents are so excited. Last night was full of joyful tears and many phone calls to family. We visited Jaimie's parents, her grandma, her sister and Emma and we called Jose's sister and parents. Our final stop was at Aaron and Zaida Murray's. A blessed and busy evening. The funniest thing was Jose's Aunt Rosita's reaction... "We have to add Mateo to Secret Santa right away!"
We are hoping to travel to Colombia by Christmas. Ticket prices are pretty high right now because of the holidays, but we are anxious to go get our baby boy! Before we can go though we have to make sure all our documents are in place and Jaimie has to apply for a Colombian Visa (required when traveling for adoption purposes). We just want to get there as soon as possible!
Please pray with us that all the necessary pieces fall into place in time enough for us to be in Colombia by Christmas. We are confident in God's timing.

Ya llego! Ayer recibimos nuestra asignación y este es nuestro precioso bebe Mateo Fernando Cogua.
El lunes 10 de Diciembre a las 2:15 de la tarde fue cuando Jaimie vio la foto de Mateo por primera vez. Olga Tasso de CHSFS había enviado un email y Jaimie lo abrió en la oficina. Yo no estaba esperando nuestra asignación y cuando yo vi la fecha de nacimiento: Marzo 31, 2007 y abrí la foto adjunta, empecé a llorar sola en el escritorio de la oficina! Que bebe tan HERMOSO! Que regalo tan precioso! Entonces llame a José Fernando inmediatamente y el vino a la iglesia tan pronto pudo.
Lo vamos a llamar Mateo Fernando Cogua. Mateo significa : regalo de Dios" y el es realmente un regalo de nuestro Dios después de tantos años de estar esperando nuestro bebe. Fernando significa líder innato y es también el segundo nombre de José. Quien sabe que significa Cogua, pero nosotros estamos muy orgullosos de tener a Mateo en la familia Cogua! ;)
Estamos muy felices! Las palabras no alcanzan para expresar nuestra alegría, Y Mateo es un bebe precioso!
Esto es lo que sabemos de él:
· Mateo es un bebe feliz, nos dicen que ríe y sonríe todo el tiempo e interactúa con todo el mundo
· Nació el 31 de Marzo, 2007, lo que quiere decir que tiene un poquitito más de ocho meses
· Ya gatea y está tomando sopas, jugos y otra comida de bebe
· Mateo es el bebe favorito de la amiga de Edelmira – ella también está muy contenta de saber que Mateo es parte de nuestra familia
Claro, nuestros padres están muy emocionados. Anoche fue una noche llena de lágrimas de felicidad y muchas llamadas a la familia. Visitamos la familia de Jaimie, sus papas, su abuela, su hermana y sobrina. Llamamos a la hermana y los papas de José. Nuestra última parada fue en casa de nuestros amigos los Murray. Un tarde súper ocupada y feliz! Lo más divertido fue la reacción de la tía Rosita…"tenemos que meter a Mateo en la lista del amigo secreto de una vez!
Estamos esperando poder viajar a Colombia para la Navidad. Los pasajes están bien costosos en estos días especialmente por la época, pero estamos ansiosos de ir y recibir nuestro bebito!
Antes de poder viajar necesitamos asegurarnos que tenemos todos los documentos en regla y bueno Jaimie tiene que sacar una visa especial (la piden para aquellos que viajan con el propósito de adoptar). Nosotros queremos estar allá lo más pronto posible!
Por favor sigan orando con nosotros para que todas las cosas salgan bien y a tiempo para que podamos estar allá en la navidad. Nosotros confiamos en el tiempo de Dios.

Baby Showers
This weekend we had TWO baby showers for our little one! We feel so blessed to have so many friends and family by our side as we walk through this adoption process.
Este fin de semana tuvimos dos "baby showers" para nuestro bebe! Nos sentimos muy bendecidos de tener tantos amigos y familia quien nos quieren tanto y que estan a lado de nosotros dentro de todo este proceso de la adopcion.
